How should I handle my freight shipments as a small business?

I own a small business and have an account to handle my parcel shipments, but I was wondering what I should do about my freight shipments? I ship a few pallets of various items every month to various places around the US and am wondering if I should set up an account with a freight carrier or have a freight broker handle my shipments?

Answer:
Since you are only shipping a few pallets a month, I would say you may want to look into using a freight broker. The freight broker will be able to get you discounts from the carriers on your shipment because of the volume of business they give the carriers. They also handle the other administrative tasks that go into shipping freight. If the amount of pallets or large items that you ship increases as the months go by, then you may want to look into opening an account with one of the larger national or regional freight carriers so you can get the discounts yourself. At that point you will have to decide if you want to handle that part of your business yourself or if you enjoy the flexibility that freight brokers provide.
